Sarugatsuji is a viewing spot at the northeast corner of the Kyoto Gyoen wall, where the corner is cut inward. To block the northeast kimon that onmyodo held to be the entry point for evil spirits, the corner was removed and a wooden statue of a monkey wearing an eboshi and carrying a gohei was placed on the east wall. The site is also where Anekoji Kintomo was assassinated on July 5, 1863, in the Sakuhei Gate incident outside Sakuhei Gate at the end of the shogunate. The monkey statue sits inside a gold net and is hard to see.
