Nijojo Gaishu is a historic site along the Horikawa walking path outside Nijojo, across Horikawa-dori from the Nijojo Dongdaesumun Gate. Stone walls once used as Nijojo’s outer moat, a gently flowing waterway, and shade from cherry trees continue along the path. The stone walls were built by the Kishu clan in 1603 and retain 21 markers identifying daimyo who took part in the construction. Information boards and benches are provided, but parts of the path receive direct sunlight around midday, making them difficult to walk.
