The observation deck at the top of Hakodateyama looks down on Hakodate, which sits between the Tsugaru Strait and Hakodate Bay. It can be reached by the Hakodateyama Ropeway, which opened in 1958, and around sunset the day and night views appear together. The night view is clearest about 30 minutes before and after sunset, and the deck holds a restaurant, a cafe, and a souvenir shop. Because it is on a mountain top, the wind is sharp and it is cold even in autumn, so warm clothing is needed.
