Yushima Tenman-gu is a shrine in Bunkyo City, Tokyo, near the University of Tokyo, dedicated to the deity of learning. Many plum trees are planted there, a plum festival is held, and students preparing for exams and their parents visit to pray for passing. Ema plaques for passing exams pile up in the grounds, and in the morning people can be seen praying. Visiting early in the plum blossom season means the flowers have not yet fully bloomed.
