The South Observatory sits on top of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building in Nishishinjuku, on a floor above the 40th, and entry is free. It looks down over the Shinjuku skyline and, in clear weather, as far as Mount Fuji, and visitors can hear a yellow piano designed by Yayoi Kusama being played. It is open from 9:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m., with last entry at 9 p.m., and at night a light show runs on the building's exterior walls. The South Observatory draws long queues, so the wait to go down is long.
