Nanzenji is a large Buddhist temple in Higashiyama, Kyoto, with a massive mountain gate standing at its entrance. Beneath the gate, thick pillars and a high ceiling make footsteps echo, and inside the grounds are a waterway aqueduct and a Japanese garden. Around 7 p.m. it begins to get dark and there are almost no people, and the grounds are not blocked by walls so you can walk through. The paid area is small and most of the inner grounds cannot be entered.
