Todai-ji is a temple in Nara Park where visitors see the Great Buddha Hall and the Vairocana Buddha. It is about a 20-minute walk from Kintetsu Nara Station and was founded in the 8th century by Emperor Shomu during the Nara period. The Great Buddha Hall is known as the world's largest wooden building and houses a bronze Great Buddha. Inside the hall is a pillar with a hole beneath it that people pass through to wish for luck and health, and deer roam up to the ticket gate; 10 to 11 a.m. is very crowded.
