Sungnyemun is a gate from the Joseon dynasty located in the city center between Seoul Station and City Hall. Also called Namdaemun, it was completed in 1398 as the southern main gate of the Hanyangdoseong fortress wall. After a fire in 2008, it was restored over five years and reopened to the public in 2013. The roof curve of the wooden pavilion on its stone base, set among office buildings, is visible up close.
