Myeongdong Cathedral stands in the middle of Myeongdong and is the symbol of the Korean Catholic Church and its first parish. Construction began in 1892 and was completed in 1898, making it the second-oldest cathedral in Korea after Yakhyeon Cathedral. A Mass for foreigners is held at 9 a.m. on Sundays, and the basement holds a religious goods shop, a coffee shop, a bakery, and a bookstore. Hats and sunglasses must be removed, slippers and flip-flops should be avoided, and eating food inside the cathedral is prohibited.
