Nihonbashi Mitsukoshi Honten is Japan's first department store, located in Nihonbashi, and it operates luxury brand counters alongside a food hall. The basement food hall sells mochi, sushi lunch boxes, melon bread, matcha bread, and wagashi. The store began as a drapery shop in the 1600s and became a department store in 1904, and its central hall, renovated in 1936, hosts an organ performance at noon. Luxury goods make up a large share of the offerings, so inexpensive shopping is hard to expect.
