Shōunji Temple

Shouun-ji is a Rinzai-shu DaiTokushi-ha temple at the end of Hiroo shopping street, reached by following the street from Hiroo Station to the sanmon gate. Kuroda Tadayuki founded it in 1623 in memory of his father Kuroda Nagamasa, and the honzon is Shakyamuni; it served as the family temple of the Kuroda clan. The grounds hold Kuroda Nagamasa's grave, about 6 meters tall, and a garden with maples and pines, and a zazen gathering is held once a month. The temple is not visible from the shopping street, making the hondo hard to find.
