Meiji Jingu is a shrine set in dense forest next to Harajuku Station, dedicated to Emperor Meiji and Empress Shoken. At the temizuya in front of the torii you wash your hands and mouth, and at the main hall you can hang ema or draw a fortune at no charge. In May it is open from 5 a.m. to 6:10 p.m., and while walking straight to the main hall takes under 30 minutes, a full visit takes about 1 to 1.5 hours. The paid inner garden is less rewarding in winter, when the pond dries up and there is less to see.
