The statue of writer and philosopher Denis Diderot stands in the center of Place Jacques Copeau, facing Boulevard Saint-Germain. Jean Gautherin made the work, which depicts Diderot leading the editing of the Encyclopédie. The square occupies the site of Diderot's former house, demolished during Haussmann's boulevard construction. Pigeons sit on the head, and the statue is dirty.
