The Carnavalet Museum in the Marais district of Paris covers the city's history from prehistory to the modern era. Its exhibits run in chronological order, from ancient artifacts in the basement to materials on the French Revolution, Napoleon and Louis XIV. The permanent exhibition spans the basement to the second floor and is free. Seeing the whole thing at a slow pace takes two to three hours, and the exhibition route winds like a maze, so it is easy to lose your way.
