Jotenji is a temple in Gionmachi, Fukuoka, with a dry garden and old wooden halls. Its karesansui uses white sand and rocks to represent sea and mountains, with wave patterns raked into the sand. The temple was founded in 1242 by Shōichi Kokushi, who studied Zen Buddhism in Song China, and a monument in the grounds commemorates the birthplace of udon and soba. The inner hall is closed off and cannot be viewed.
