Sumiyoshi Shrine in Fukuoka enshrines the three Sumiyoshi deities, who protect seafarers, and sits within walking distance of Hakata Station. It is known as the origin of roughly 2,000 Sumiyoshi shrines across Japan, and inside its dense trees and red torii gate stand statues of carp and of sumo wrestlers praying for strong luck. Walking the grounds takes about 15 minutes, and photography is not allowed in the worship hall where prayers are offered. The shrine also has a space for hanging wish plaques, and its size is not large, so there is not much to see.
