Amatsu Shrine Tenryu Pond

Amatsu Shrine Tenryu Pond is a pond and shrine across from the west gate of Sumiyoshi Shrine in Fukuoka, and it is a historic site that includes Amatsu Shrine on a turtle island in the pond. The pond is a sacred site tied to the tradition that Izanagi no Okami washed himself after returning from Yomi, and Amatsu Shrine is a branch shrine of Sumiyoshi Shrine where people pray for relationships and protection from misfortune. Seawater reached this spot at high tide, so it was also called Shioiri Pond. The small plot beside the road draws many people, making it hard to stay long.
