The Maaebul on the northern foot of Namsan in Gyeongju is a seated Buddha carved into a rock niche during the Silla period of the Three Kingdoms era, and its face retains a familiar, grandmotherly look. After parking, walk about 15 minutes along a gentle mountain path and climb the paved stairs to reach it beside a bamboo grove. The niche is carved roughly 1 meter deep, and around the winter solstice sunlight falls on the Buddha's face.
