Gongsanseong is a mountain fortress that served as a royal castle during the Baekje Ungjin period and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site beside the Geumgang in Gongju. The walls began as an earthen fortification and were later rebuilt in stone, and walking along them looks down over the Geumgang and the old downtown of Gongju. A full loop along the walls takes more than an hour, with pavilions and water stations along the way and continuous ascents and descents. The fortress path has almost no shade, so a parasol or handheld fan is needed in summer.
