Sekihoji is a Obaku Zen Buddhist temple a 10-minute walk from Fushimi Inari Taisha, where five hundred arhat stone Buddhas sit in a bamboo grove. The statues were drawn by Edo-period painter Ito Jakuchu and carved by stone masons on the temple's rear hill. Jakuchu lived in the temple's hermitage in his later years, and the five hundred arhats depict Shakyamuni's life from birth to nirvana, taking over 10 years to complete. Photographing the stone Buddhas is prohibited.
