Yushima Koshi Shrine sits just across the Hijiribashi bridge from Ochanomizu Station in Tokyo, a black-painted historical site dedicated to Confucius. Tokugawa Tsunayoshi founded it in 1690, and it later became the Shoeizaka Gakumonjo, a shogunate-run academy. The grounds are free to enter and lead from the Iriguchi-mon gate to the black-painted Taiseiden hall. On weekdays the interior of the Taiseiden is closed, so the statues of Confucius and the four sages inside cannot be seen.
