Sri Mariamman Temple in Chinatown is a Hindu temple dedicated to the goddess Mariamman, who governs and protects against disease. The gopuram tower at the entrance holds hundreds of Hindu deities and carvings, and the main hall enshrines Rama, Murugan, Ganesha and Draupadi. Built in 1827, it is a Singapore national monument, and visitors take off their shoes at the shoe rack to the right of the entrance, where there is also a place to wash their feet. In summer the floor becomes very hot and uncomfortable to walk on barefoot.
