The Altar of the Fatherland stands in front of Piazza Venezia and commemorates Italian unification and the first king, Vittorio Emanuele II. The white marble building holds the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and an equestrian statue of the king, and the rooftop terrace looks out over the Colosseum and the Roman Forum. It was completed in 1935, and the entrance and exit are in different places. An elevator at the back goes up to a 360-degree view of Rome, and the line for the terrace elevator is long, so a wait is required.
