Catacombae is an early Christian underground burial site in Rome where believers and nine popes were buried. It was built in the late 2nd century and holds a 20km maze of tombs with around 150,000 burials. Tickets bought on site without a reservation allow entry to a group guided tour. The interior is dark and damp, and the stairs are steep.
