Basilica di San Clemente sits near the Colosseum and holds churches and ruins stacked in layers. The upper level has detailed mosaics and floor tiles, while two levels below are traces of medieval church frescoes and remains of an ancient Roman residential building. Dominican friars from Ireland began excavations in 1857, and the sound of spring water flowing can be heard underground. It is smaller than Rome's major basilicas.
