Hotel Esmeralda is an old hotel that rents rooms in central Paris beside Notre-Dame Cathedral. Its windows look out on Notre-Dame, and the bells ring at every hour. The owner carries heavy suitcases up to the second floor and hails airport taxis himself. There is no air conditioning, so sleeping is difficult on hot Paris summer nights.
