Sogenji Temple Site stands near Makishi and Kokusai Street in Naha, marking the remains of a temple from the Ryukyu Kingdom era. Built in the 15th century, it enshrined successive kings, and a large gajumaru tree remains within its stone gate and stone walls. The buildings were lost in the 1945 Battle of Okinawa, but a miniature model of Sogenji and stone steps now sit in the inner plaza, and the city noise fades past the gate. There are no chairs to sit on, so it is hard to rest for long.
